Nothing says summer like fresh berry season!

Charleton Farm is back with its annual ‘pick your own fruit’, running from July. Well known for their huge strawberries and super strawberry tarts, this farm outside Montrose provides fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the seasons.

Currently you can pick strawberries, gooseberries, and peas, with tayberries joining the available list around mid of July. This fun family friendly activity always goes down a treat, particularly when followed up with some ice-cream on a sunny day !

There is plenty to do at Charleton too! Their huge play park, go kart track and trampolines keep the kids busy all day long. Montrose Tesco and the new food voucher scheme inspired by a Firefighter.

If you’ve visited Tesco, Montrose over the last couple of days you may have noticed the addition of a pinboard on entering the store. This board is part of an initiative dreamt up by a local firefighter, Michael Cassie.

Watch Commander Michael Cassie explained he was inspired by a family in front of him in the supermarket who were struggling to cover the cost of their shopping. After offering to help cover their bill, he began to think about the stigma and barriers stopping people using the local foodbanks. He realised families often can’t fit their ‘shopping time’ to the foodbank hours and there could be a better way to help.

The voucher scheme is now being supported by the community together partnership and funded by Angus Council. The scheme is there to support food banks, which currently struggle to meet local demand with their limited opening hours.

The voucher gives people the freedom to do their own shop and pick their own items, rather than getting given items they might not necessarily use.

The scheme works by shoppers in Tesco picking up the vouchers from the board, paying for them with their shopping and then the store distributes these vouchers to verified charities helping the scheme. These charities then re-distribute the vouchers to those in need, along with healthy recipe cards to help inspire how the vouchers can be used to create meal options.

With the cost of living continuously on the rise, this scheme is a great step towards helping the local people.
